Hi everybody. Welcome to 2012, the best year of your life! Let’s kick things off with a little motivation. I love this video, and when you watch it, you probably will, too. I have never seen anyone explain the benefits of exercise better than this doctor. Here’s the question of the day: What treatment is proven to help reduce the risk of arthritis, hip fractures in post-menopausal women, diabetes and hypertension, dementia/Alzheimer in older folks, depression, and heart disease in the general public? Is it a superpill or a wonder plant? Is it an injection? Is it a type of surgery? Is it the advice of a guru sitting on a mountain top? None of the above. The pharmaceutical companies have not developed a single pill that can deal with all of these issues, but they’re trying. The treatment that helps with all of the above and so much more is plain ol’ fashioned exercise. If you’ve been reading my blog, you guessed that already, right?
You don’t have to be a triathlete. You will yield tangible benefits with just 30 minutes of a moderate activity such as walking. You can spend the remaining 23 1/2 hours of your day doing other stuff. Pretty simple, huh? If you are balking at the idea of 30 minutes of exercise, you’re probably too far gone to be helped.
I have to point out the video is definitely directed towards the super sedentary (like me two and a half years ago). While I agree that any form of exercise is better than none, I tend to believe that to achieve complete fitness, you have to increase the vigor and intensity. Although thirty minutes of daily walking may help keep many diseases at bay, that is not the same thing as being fit. To me, fitness is not just about being disease free (which is a low baseline as far as I’m concerned), it means being able to live my life without any physical limitations. That’s why exercise is not negotiable. It’s going to happen, rain or shine. If I can’t go outside, I’ll workout inside. If I can’t do an hour, I’ll do half. If I can’t jog three miles, I’ll do one.
