P90X Success Story (Richard N.)

I was in the audience this weekend when it was announced that Richard was the male Grand Prize winner of the 2012 Beachbody Challenge contest. It was probably one of the most emotional moments I have experienced with a stranger. The speech he gave made every well up and brought goosebumps to my skin. I looked around and I saw a bunch of grown men and women wipe tears from their faces. I never cry in public, but it was impossible not to be moved by his story of courage, conviction, and commitment.

It’s incredibly hard for me to wrap my head around the full extent of Richard’s achievement. For some people, losing 50 pounds is a miracle. Richard achieved four miracles because he lost a total of 200 pounds in thirteen months. Let’s put this in perspective-I weigh 115 pounds. That means he lost an equivalent of almost two mes. So, for most of his adult life, Richard had been carrying around the equivalent of two full grown women on his frame everyday, all the time. Talk about wear and tear on the body. When I lift heavy weights, I can put them to the ground when I’m done and walk away. Not people like Richard. He had to carry that extra weight with him all the time. Just the thought of going up a flight of stars with a 200 barbell makes my legs melt, but that was his life for many years. Here’s the craziest part–he could not weigh himself with a regular scale. He had to go to a metal scrap yard in order to see how much he weighed.

But no more. Richard finally got sick of being “the fat guy” and decided to do something about it. He took action. He purchased Power90 (but later transitioned to P90X). Unlike most people, he used his workout program instead of letting it collect dust on his shelf. Additionally, he revamped his eating habits. Dropped the crappy greasy stuff and started to eat foods which fueled his body instead of killing it. He made health and fitness a lifestyle.

When I was listening to Richard talk about his transformation story, it struck me how vitally important the mission of Beachbody has become. Richard was among a growing number of Americans who are morbidly obese. More than two-thirds of adults in this country are in that category. The trend line looks more bleak each year. However, Beachbody is a health and fitness company that creates products, services, and programs that actually work. Richard and tens of thousands of people across the country are proof of that. No gimmicks. No magic pills or potions. And no bullshit.

Richard’s story also changed my attitude in a profound way. I am now even less tolerant of excuses and cop-outs. If this guy, who has been fat all his life can manage to lose 200 pounds in thirteen months, then anyone should be able to do the same thing. It’s just a matter of deciding that you want to transform your body, committing to a program to do it, and succeeding by using the tools at your disposal.
